In conjunction with its 30th anniversary celebration, the Duxbury Land Trust is sponsoring free Introduction to Fly Fishing clinics on Saturday, July 20, with outdoorsman Bill Whitehair. Plans for these workshops have been revised since the recent flooding event.

These classes will be a low-pressure introduction appropriate for adults as well as children ages 10 and older who are accompanied by a parent.

The two classes will now be held on Ridley Brook, depending on water quality. Participants will be notified in the case of cancellation. As previously scheduled, the Tenkara style clinic will be held from 1-4 p.m. A traditional-style class will be held from 5-7 p.m.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Whitehair enjoys introducing people to the outdoor activities that he has enjoyed much of his life. A member of the Waterbury-Stowe Fish & Game Club, Bill has worked professionally as an outdoor guide and writer.

The meeting spot is at the Duxbury Land Trust property located at the junction of River and Camel’s Hump roads in North Duxbury. Parking is available.

Those with equipment are asked to bring their gear along if possible. The land trust will cover the basics of equipment, flies and fly selection, and a few different casts used to get your fly to the fish. Limited rod/reel combos will be provided.

Recommended essentials: rain gear, shoes appropriate for water (such as felt-soled boots), and insect repellent.

Registration is limited and required ahead of time by contacting Janet Bisbee by email at janet.bisbee@gmail.com or call 651-788-2868.

Those 15 and older wishing to participate need a Vermont state fishing license which can be purchased online at vtfwdsales.com or at Parro’s Gun Shop on U.S. Route 2 in Waterbury. One option is a three-day license available for Vermont residents for $11. Find details about Vermont fishing licenses online here or by calling 802-828-1190.
