New youth librarian + October programs at the Waterbury Public Library
September 28, 2023 | By Waterbury Roundabout
The Waterbury Public Library recently welcomed a new Children’s and Youth Librarian, Sandra Schewikert.
According to the library’s announcement, she grew up in Northfield and attended St. Michael's College. Her post-graduate work included opera and theater in Miami and New York City. She most recently worked in Louisville, Kentucky, in teen services at the Louisville Public Library. She’s now returned to Central Vermont.
“I couldn’t be more delighted to join this vibrant, caring community,” Schweikert said. She recently attended a children’s book event at the Children’s Literacy Foundation in Waterbury Center along with DeAnna Romstad, the library’s Outreach Librarian. There they met community members and signed up several children for their first library cards in celebration of Library Card Sign-Up Month.
Find Schewikert on the first floor of the library. She and Romstad will also be representing the library at community events throughout the year.
Below are several program notes from Judi Byron, the library’s adult program coordinator.
Popular watercolor class continues through December
The watercolor class with Pauline Nolte “Discover your Creative Self” has been extended
throughout the fall due to popular demand. The class runs on Mondays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the
Steele Community Room next to the library in the municipal building. Pauline offers instruction and
demonstration followed by attendees working on their creations. Supplies are provided and the
classes are free. Whether you have never painted before, painted in the past, or are painting now, join fellow artists to create art together.
Dates through the rest of the year are: Oct. 2 and 23; Nov. 6, 13, 20, 27; Dec. 4
and 11. Register by sending an email to judi@waterburypubliclibrary.com.
Board Game Night returns Oct. 11
Board Game Night is back with games galore and Robert Bradford as host. If you’ve ever wanted to play board games but felt intimidated, if you’ve played in the past but lost your group, if you want more variety in your life, come check out the library’s offering. Beginning Oct. 11 and running monthly on the second Wednesday of the month, 6-8 p.m., the group is open to teens and up, experienced players and newbies alike.
Games are Euro-style which means they are designer games with strategy and thinking involved. Not to worry, games are explained before play and the group is super-welcoming. Robert has a plethora of games from which to choose and you also can also bring your own.
No need to register. Just show up. Pizza will be offered.
Stand-Up Comedy Workshop Oct. 14
Korean-American comic Denise McCarty has entertained folks all over the state of Vermont and the East Coast with her wit and humor. Many saw her emcee at the American Legion last spring to benefit the Waterbury Ambulance Service.
Maybe you have an urge to share your gift of humor with others. How to get started? Denise will be presenting a Stand Up Comedy Writing Workshop geared especially toward beginners. It takes courage to stand up in front of folks and be vulnerable and it takes insight to craft relevant comedy. Denise has both and she shares her wealth of experience and years of training with you and gives you tools to write yours.
What are the elements of comedy? What makes a good joke? How to handle hecklers? There will be writing exercises and a chance for participants to perform (if they would like to) in a safe comfortable space. This happens on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon. This workshop is geared toward the adult beginner. Register ahead of time with an email to judi@waterburypubliclibrary.com.
