April 2: Our Favorite Things
Remember show and tell when you were a kid? Wasn’t it fun to share a favorite object and story with your friends? Why should the fun end when you grow up?
The Waterbury Public Library invites teens and adults on Tuesday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m. for Adult Show & Tell.
Everyone has favorite things – quirky, sentimental, or just plain fascinating items with great backstories. Bring your things to the library to share with friends and neighbors, and hear some great stories in return.
April 12: Ask a Tech Question, Live!
Do you have a tech-related question or issue that you have not been able to solve? Are you wondering if there is a better way to do something on a tech device? If so, the library has a great opportunity for you.
It can be something as simple as how to send a picture from a smartphone or how to turn off annoying notifications, to tips on essential apps to use on a new Mac computer or iPad or a recommendation for new Bluetooth headphones.
On Tuesday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom, Waterbury Public Library Technology Librarian Kyle Creason will host Ask a Tech Question, Live! offering free tech advice. Bring your questions and Kyle will do his best to help resolve your questions or issues.
The Zoom link is on the library’s website at waterburypubliclibrary.com/ask-a-tech-question/. If possible, email Kyle at kyle@waterburypubliclibrary.com prior to the class with your questions, to give him time to research if needed. Questions will be addressed in the order they are received.
April 23: “Good Naked” - Wit, Wisdom & a Writing Workshop
Author Joni Cole is back on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to noon for “Good Naked - Wit, Wisdom & a Writing Workshop.” Cole invites participants to write from a prompt as a means of mining their own meaningful story material.
Whether you consider yourself a writer, an artist, a wannabe, or an enthusiast for new experiences, this event offers participants a chance to uncover their creative potential. Come to learn and have fun. Leave self-doubts at the door.
Joni B. Cole is the author of “Good Naked: Reflections on How to Write More, Write Better, and Be Happier” which is on the Poets & Writers list of "Best Books for Writers." She founded the Writer's Center of White River Junction, Vermont, and teaches and speaks at a variety of academic programs and writing conferences.
Registration is required. To sign up and for more information call 244-7036 or email judi@waterburypubliclibrary.com. This workshop replaces the monthly Writers’ Wertfrei meeting.
April 26: Open Mic Poetry Night
In honor of National Poetry Month, the library will offer the community a chance to celebrate the expressiveness, the delight, and the beauty of the poetic phrase. What is it about poetry that stirs our hearts, paints a picture in our minds, changes our inward landscape, and even gives us hope?
Whether you consider yourself a poet or not, come to share an original poem, a favorite, or just to listen starting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.
April 29: Earth Day Movie Night
To mark Earth Day, the Waterbury Public Library in collaboration with Waterbury Local Energy Action Partnership (LEAP) will host Earth Day Movie Night Friday, April 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Steele Room at the municipal complex.
The film to be presented is “2040,” a documentary about the future we could create if we embraced the best climate solutions available today. It is structured as a visual letter to the director’s daughter, blending traditional documentary footage with dramatized sequences and visual effects to create a vision board for the next generation and the planet.
Written, directed and starring Australian Damon Gameau, the film is described as “an exercise in fact-based dreaming.” In it, Gameau travels the world investigating solutions with potential to mitigate climate change by the year 2040.
A discussion will follow the film viewing. Free snacks and drinks will be provided. If you can, please bring your own cup to reduce waste.
April 30: Backyard Composting
Whether you have been composting for years or are brand new to it, all are welcome to Backyard Composting with John Malter, director of the Mad River Resource Management Alliance. Malter loves compost and talking about it. You’ll learn the basics about space requirements, use of compost, what goes in and what stays out and more as Malter makes composting fun and you’ll learn a bit of science in the process. This is also an opportunity to troubleshoot composting issues to be more effective.
This session will be held Saturday, April 30, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Steele Room of the municipal complex.
At the same time, Children's Librarian Cynthia Ryle will host a special session for kids with hands-on composting activities in the library. (Dress for mess!) Kids will learn about the greens and browns by making layers and taking home a composting kit.
Attendees in the workshop with Malter may purchase a Soil Saver Compost Bin for just $45. Malter also has Green Cones available for composting meat and bones. Registration is required. Contact Malter at malterport@aol.com by April 27 with your name, phone number, email and town of residence.
