Obituary: Barbara Jean Rolland

Barbara Jean (Castle) Rolland, of Barre Town, Vermont, age 76, died June 5, 2024, with family by her side at the University of Vermont Medical Center, Burlington, Vermont, after a prolonged illness.

She was born on June 28, 1947, in Rochester, New York, the daughter of Lois Rhem (Castle-Garrett) and Earl Castle of Waterloo, New York. She graduated from Clifton Springs (N.Y.) High School and attended Binghamton College before marrying her high-school sweetheart, Thomas Rolland. Over the years, she worked in various secretarial positions, living in New York, Connecticut and Vermont.

Barbara was most passionate about people. She loved her family and was a committed mother and homemaker. She enjoyed family events and socializing with friends – she always had a few minutes to visit. Throughout her life, Barbara helped others, volunteering in the community. A dedicated member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, she held positions as church clerk, children’s Sabbath School teacher, children’s adventurer leader, deaconess and food pantry coordinator. Barbara also enjoyed flower arranging, cooking, traveling, drum and bugle corp, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles.

Barbara is lovingly remembered by her son Chadd (wife Erika) and grandchildren (Benjamin, Zachary, Jonathan, Anneliese) of Edinboro, Pennsylvania; son Ty (wife Nancy) and grandchildren (Kelsey, Kilee, Joshua) of East Montpelier, Vermont; daughter Heather Brown of Loma Linda, California; daughter Erinn Rolland-Forkey (husband Mark) and grandchildren (Alisha, Levi, Carter) of Waterbury, Vermont; mother Lois Rehm (Castle-Garret), California; brother John in California; sister-in-law Carol Castle in Colorado; sister-in-law Carol Castle in Florida; brother-in-law Roy Rolland (wife Kay), in New York; sister-in-law, Marilyn Holtham (Rolland) in North Carolina; sister-in-law MaryAnn Rolland in Florida; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Thomas, her father Earl in New York, brother Gary in Alabama, brother-in-law William in New York, and nephew Heath Castle in Colorado. 

Barbara is buried beside her husband in Green Mountain Cemetery in Montpelier. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 7, at 2 p.m. with calling hours at 1 p.m., at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home, 48 S. Main St., Waterbury. Memorial contributions may be made to the Barre Garden Club or the Barre Food Bank.
