Theater skills workshop runs six weeks at the Grange Hall Cultural Center

December 28, 2023 | By Waterbury Roundabout

New Stage Players Theater Lab will offer a six-week scene study workshop for adults and teens in January and February at the Grange Hall Cultural Center in Waterbury Center.

The group will meet on Tuesdays starting Jan. 16 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., ending on Feb. 20. Participants at all levels are welcome; ages 13 and up. The class size is limited.

Through targeted scene study work, this workshop series will seek to develop skills to build confidence, understand where your natural performance strengths lie, and allow participants to have fun. A goal is for attendees to perform better at auditions and deliver when cast in a role.

Participants will learn how to analyze a script for its acting potential, apply techniques from a variety of proven acting methods, and liberate body, mind, and creativity in the process.

Instructor and Director Monica Callan has more than 40 years of experience in theater to share with participants of this workshop. She acts, directs, produces, designs and writes. Her career has taken her onstage or backstage in New York City, Vermont, Boston, regional theaters in New England, and in films.

Callan says this class is for anyone who just wants to have fun as well as those who are serious about upping their “acting chops.”  It’s also a great way to practice theater craft between roles.

Theater Lab points out that the trick to acting is simply honoring who you are, learning a certain level of technique, and being prepared enough to know what to do in the given situation.  And yes, practice, practice, practice. Everyone’s path is unique. This workshop can provide a foundation or add to an actor’s performance toolbox in a safe, respectful environment.

Memorization and some communication outside of class is involved.

Register online at sevendaystickets.com. Fee: $90. Scholarships are available. Proceeds will benefit the Grange Hall Renovation Fund. Sponsored by Across Roads Center for the Arts.
