If you missed last week’s opening reception, there’s still lots of time to catch the latest exhibition at Axel’s Gallery and Frame Shop. “The Way Light Answers” featuring paintings by Montpelier artist Jan Sandman is on view through Aug. 14.

The collection is a body of work primarily created during the pandemic. In describing these latest works, Sandman says, “Sometimes the paintings are landscapes, sometimes more abstract - depending on the dimension of where the answer lies.”

The original cold wax and oil paintings are the result of purposely limiting her color palette. The results are soft, balanced colors and subtle compositions.

On her website, Sandman describes the  medium as physically satisfying to work with. “When I discovered cold wax work, I felt as though I had come home. Here was a medium that had the freedom of expression and texture and layering and luminosity that spoke to me so deeply,” she writes.

Sandman likens her work to a conversation with the universe. “She invites you to come in, to listen through your eyes, stay awhile and contemplate your place on earth,” according to the show’s preview.

Last week’s well-attended opening reception was the first such event at Axel’s this year. The shop is open Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information is online at jansandmanart.com and at AxelsGallery.com.
