Several Harwood Union High School freshmen added art to another streetside electrical box this week, painting the traffic signal control box at the intersection of South Main Street and Park Row.
Sponsored by MakerSphere and the Waterbury Anti-Racism Coalition, the project has involved middle and high school students to beautify two Main Street electrical utility boxes.
Burlington artist Julio Desmont, who has worked with students in local schools, was hired by the Waterbury Area Anti-Racism Coalition to assist with the project.
The first box at the corner of Stowe and Main streets was painted in late August and the second box at the corner of Main and Park Row was done last week.
“There were many positive comments from passersby as the boxes were painted, and all of the students involved were extremely proud of their work,” said MK Monley, an art teacher with MakerSphere and volunteer with the anti-racism coalition who coordinated the effort.
The boxes are owned by the town of Waterbury and contain controls for the traffic light signals at the two intersections. The Waterbury Select Board granted approval to the student art on the boxes.
Monley thanked the board “for trusting in the students' design ideas.”
MakerSphere volunteers prepped the boxes and provided the paint.
