The Waterbury-Stowe Fish & Game Club held its 61st annual Kids Fishing Derby last weekend with 58 young anglers up to age 12 taking part.

Sunday’s weather was cloudy and cool, perfect for a fishing derby, according to organizers.

Participants registered in three age groups: 5 and under, ages 6-8, and ages 9-12.

The rules are simple: no lures - worms only; keep every trout caught with a three-fish limit per child.

Club member Bill Whitehair organized the tournament with support from club President Silas Power, Secretary Kirk Mayes and board member George Bambara.

Anglers kept the officials busy logging in 96 trout in under two hours.

The winners were:

  • Autumn Yeatmar won first place in the 5 and under group along with First Fish, Largest Fish and Two Different Fish awards. Second place in the group went to Emmett Gaylord and Finley Young took third place.

  • In the ages 6-8 group, first place went to Emery McArthur, second place to Bo Lemery, and Freya Clark was third.

  • Charlie Power won first place in the ages 9-12 category followed by Isabella Laskey in second place and Noah Vanderberg in third place.

Established in 1949, the Waterbury-Stowe Fish & Game Club is located along Vermont Route 100 in Waterbury Center. It promotes conservation of wildlife and natural resources and the safe use of firearms for skeet and trap shooting and hunting, along with archery, fishing, and related sporting and outdoor activities.
