The public is invited to take in two photographic exhibitions on view in downtown Waterbury, one part of a contest and another the work of a local photo club hosting a reception on Sunday.

Axel’s Frame Shop and Gallery recently put out a call for its Shoot Out contest challenging local photographers to submit images around the theme of shadows. Submissions are now on view at the gallery at 5 Stowe St.

Stop by to vote on your favorites before 5 p.m. next Friday, Nov. 19. The winner will get a solo exhibition at Axel’s in 2022.

Across Main Street from Axel’s at the Congregational Church, a photo exhibit titled “Awakenings” from a Central Vermont photography club is set up inside the sanctuary. A reception with the shooters is scheduled for Sunday, 1-3 p.m. with refreshments served outdoors, weather permitting.

The photo group is called f/7, after the photographic term for the focal length of the lens divided by its aperture. They are a half dozen photographers from the region who produce and exhibit works collectively. Their styles and techniques vary as they produce images around a common theme.

“Awakenings” was created during the COVID-19 pandemic reflecting on the current times through each of the photographers’ unique perspectives. The club members will attend Sunday’s reception to talk about their work. Attendees are asked to wear a mask indoors.

The exhibit will be on view until late November. More information online at waterburyucc.com/blog.
