Obituary: Rachel S. Cubit

February 1, 2024Updated on April 24: A memorial service for Rachel Sterling Cubit, who passed away on January 28, will be held on Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury, followed by a luncheon at the church.

Rachel S. Cubit (Reynolds) of Duxbury, passed away peacefully on January, 28, 2024, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family.
Rachel was born on September 14, 1924, to Asa and Zana Belle Reynolds
(Sterling). She married the late Percy Cubit in November 1946 and they started their large family of seven children.
Rachel was employed by the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury for 35 years as a psychiatric technician on the children's ward, a job that she cherished. She also owned and operated an assisted living home on Main Street in Waterbury caring for six individuals.
She was an active member of the Harry S. Cutting American Legion as well as the Waterbury Area Senior Center where she organized the Easter basket and Thanksgiving raffle, raising money for the Senior Center, two activities she dearly loved. She was the longest-recorded member of the Wesley United Methodist Church which she was very proud to be a member of.
Rachel was considered an ICON. The lives that she impacted are too many to list. She was a selfless and compassionate woman who always gave and never asked for anything in return. She supported many causes in Waterbury that were dear to her heart.
Some of her hobbies included yard sales every Saturday, playing cards, and collecting dolls with her sister. She was a wonderful cook, and she was famous for her rolls, baked beans, and peanut butter fudge.
Rachel is survived by her daughter Pamela Perry of Waterbury, son William Cubit and partner LynAnn Williams of Ocala, Florida, daughter Carol Humphrey and husband Randy of Williamstown, sons Arthur and Dale Cubit of Duxbury, and son Donald Cubit of Bolton; 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren as well as four step-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Florence Reynolds of Williston, sister-in-law Gladys Cubit of Hyde Park, former daughters-in-law Marilyn Bission of Barre, Kim Courchaine of Waterbury, and Eileen Morse of Williston; several nieces and nephews whom she considered her own children, as well as a special cousin Joyce Wells of Plattsburgh, New York.
Rachel was predeceased by her parents, husband Percy, son Gary Reynolds, great-granddaughter Megan (Perry) Bailey, her sister Christine Whitcomb, and brother Robert Reynolds.
Rachel resided with her son Arthur for many years where she received the most amazing care that anyone could ever hope for. He was assisted by the Hospice Team and Nurse Jenna. They were an incredible support system for us. We want to also give a special thanks to Kim Durand who was a tremendous help to Arthur.
The family wants to give a very special thank you to our brother Arthur for the selfless way he cared for our mother. We can't imagine what we would have done without him.
A memorial service has been scheduled for Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury, followed by a luncheon at the church. Memorial contributions in Rachel’s name may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury.
