Water Lily Reflection by Paul Haverstick

Axel’s Gallery & Frame Shop has announced the theme for its annual photo contest with a call to artists to submit entries by October that capture beauty in nature around the theme of “Reflections.”

The prize? A solo exhibition at Axel’s in 2023.

Gallery owner Whitney Aldrich in announcing the contest noted that, “Entries will not only be judged by a small panel of professionals embedded in the art and photography world of Vermont, but by your peers (a person who is equal to another in abilities and qualifications!)”

This year’s Photo Shoot-Out theme was chosen by Paul Haverstick, last year’s Shoot-Out winner. Haverstick’s work has been on exhibition for several weeks with the final day being this Saturday, March 5.

The contest began in 2018 as a way to tap into the community in search of photographic excellence among amateur photographers as cameras have become ubiquitous.

More from Aldrich on the contest concept: “Reflections in photography can lead to some amazing effects and beautiful images. They can be found everywhere, on easily available things like glass, water or any shiny and reflective surface. Yet, despite being commonplace, they’re still fascinating and beautiful to photograph. The wonderful thing is that they can completely alter the image from something fairly straightforward to something richer or abstract or otherwise more artistic.  Reflections can spice up an otherwise lifeless photo and turn it into an amazing image.”

Important details:

  • All photographs must be taken outdoors.

  • A point of reference needs to be within the composition.

  • All capture and processing methods are welcome.

  • Entries will be judged based on: Originality/Creativity/Imagination; Composition; Emotional Impact/Expressiveness; and Presentation.

Deadline: Drop off entries at Axel’s at 5 Stowe St., Waterbury, by 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. Entries will be put on exhibition Oct. 12-22.

Fee: $20 per entry, limited to two entries per photographer
