This Sunday, Sept. 4, the Sugarbush Polo Club hosts a benefit match at the Shelburne Polo Field to support the nonprofit Prevent Child Abuse Vermont.

The oldest of equestrian sports, polo is a fast-paced game played on horseback between two teams of four players each who use a mallet with long, flexible handles to drive a wooden ball down a grass field between two goalposts.

Gates open at 1 p.m. and the match begins at 2 p.m. The event also will include a 50/50 raffle. Spectators are invited to bring chairs and a picnic. Tickets are $25 per car and payable at the gate with cash or check.

The Shelburne Polo Field is located at 929 Shelburne-Hinesburg Road. For more information, call 1-800-CHILDREN (1-800-244-5373).

Based in Montpelier, Prevent Child Abuse Vermont promotes and supports healthy relationships within families, schools, and communities to eliminate child abuse. More information is online at pcavt.org.
