The latest exhibition at Axel’s Gallery & Frame Shop will be the focus by artist Heather Bernek tonight who plans to visit to discuss her paintings on view through Feb. 5.

“Musings from the Nurses Room” is an exhibition of abstract paintings that Bernek Guptill created in her studio, once the nurses room in a converted school in Kittery, Maine.

The colorful, large-scale original acrylic works are done on ram board - a material the artist chose specifically with exploration and spontaneity in mind.

She explains: “My paintings come from deep within me. Much of my process lacks any formal or conscious decision-making. My creation of color and line comes from what feels ‘right.’ It isn’t until I have paused, to really look at my work, that I can reflect in a more formal art-sense on the balance and tension of the painting.  I continue to be amazed at what the subconscious can create.”

Tonight’s meet-the-artist event runs 6 to 8 p.m. at Axel’s with Bernek Guptill scheduled to speak at 7. The event is free.
