Two events in downtown Waterbury on Saturday are bound to draw a crowd: a Fire Department and EMS open house and a high school basketball teams car wash.

Waterbury Fire Department and Waterbury Ambulance Service will join the state’s first coordinated recruitment effort with an open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Main Street fire station.

Visitors can check out the fire trucks, an ambulance, get child car seat safety checks and more. There will be snacks early and hot dogs around lunchtime. Members of both services will be on site to talk with visitors. Learn more about each service and what volunteering involves.

The event is one of dozens behind held around Vermont as local first response organizations look to recruit new members for volunteer and paid positions. Here’s a link to a list of the participating departments

Next door to the fire station starting at 10 a.m. members of the Harwood Union High School Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball teams will hold a car wash fundraiser at Waterbury Service Center until 2 p.m.

The suggested donation is $15 with an option for undercarriage cleaning.

In addition, team members will be serving up hot dogs, hamburgers, beef and venison jerky, and soft drinks for purchase. They also will run a 50/50 raffle (winner doesn’t need to be present).
