Waitsfield United Church presents antique quilt show
July 24, 2021 | By Waterbury Roundabout
In its first community event post-pandemic, the Waitsfield United Church of Christ presents a quilt show over the next several weeks at the Village Meeting House.
“Coming Home: Our Lives in Quilts” will be open to the public on exhibit free for three weekends, 12-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, July 24 through Aug. 8.
The show consists of 12 antique quilts belonging to members of the congregation on display in the church sanctuary. The show comes as the church community has recently resumed in-person services. Its subjects evoke a sense of family and loved ones.
The quilts range in age from one that’s more than 100 years old to one created just 20 years ago. Each quilt has a story, which will be shared as part of the presentation. For example, one is made of a grandfather’s ties; another uses a mother’s old dresses and sackcloth to create a garden scene; one tells the story of an epic family journey across the country to California. And a lovely “Cherry Basket” quilt is actually a mystery with the makers’ names written on different squares.
The Waitsfield United Church of Christ Village Meeting House has been exhibiting artwork during the summer for eight years. The 2020 exhibit, like so much else, was cancelled. “We are incredibly excited to bring back the summer art show,” said Amy Jamieson, church moderator. “Each year the Arts Committee thoughtfully puts together a show that we believe will captivate and resonate with the community.”
“Coming Home: Our Lives in Quilts” will run Saturdays and Sundays, July 24-Aug. 8, 12–4 p.m. Admission is free. The Waitsfield United Church of Christ Village Meeting House is located at 4355 Main St./Route 100, Waitsfield. For more information, call 802-496-3065.
