Poetry events in Montpelier this week and next
April 16, 2023 | By Waterbury Roundabout
Lost Nation Theater hosts two upcoming poetry events at Montpelier’s City Hall Arts Center where audiences will have a chance to interact and participate.
On Wednesday, April 19, spoken-word poet Rajnii Eddins will perform his poems and hold a question-and-answer session with the audience starting at 7:30 p.m.
Eddins will recite poems from his books “Their Names Are Mine,” “In the Coded Language of this Mortal Tongue,” and others. Originally from Seattle Washington, Eddins is a poet, artist and educator who has been engaging diverse community audiences for more than 27 years.
The reading and dialogue will run approximately 70 minutes without intermission. A $10 donation is suggested.
Lost Nation Theater encourages and appreciates audience members wearing masks, although it is not required. The theater uses a Synexis Bio-Defense air purification system.

All-ages poetry slam
A second event on Tuesday, April 25, features Vermont poet Geof Hewitt in an Anything Goes, All Ages! poetry slam at 7 p.m. at Montpelier City Hall.
This free event co-hosted by Poem City will give writers and performers three minutes to wow the audience and vie for prizes. In addition, audience members chosen at random will score the performances.
Organizers remind attendees that it’s all-ages, so discretion is required and creativity is encouraged. The event announcement asks, “Can the single voice of an impassioned poet outscore a harp and guitar duet, a juggling linguistic, or a rapping martial artist?”
The poetry slam is free of charge, although donations are accepted. No tickets needed. It will be held in the lobby cabaret at city hall. Masks encouraged but not required.
