Some two dozen local businesses have agreed to hide Waldo in plain sight this month. Organized by Bridgeside Books the Where’s Waldo Local game is a promotion to get people into local businesses, have some fun and give away some Waldo-related prizes.

Know that several of the businesses taking part may be closed due to the flooding this week but most participating are still on their regular schedules.

To enter, pick up a Waldo Passport at Bridgeside Books or download and print your own and be sure to get it marked wherever you spot Waldo. The passport lists all of the possible spots you might find Waldo during the month of July.

Who — or what—is Waldo? He’s a popular character in a series of seven children’s books created by British illustrator Martin Handford. The books contain detailed drawings of crowd scenes with the Waldo character surrounded by many others and the challenge is for the reader to find him. The original books actually ask “Where’s Wally?” and the name of the character wearing glasses and the famous red-and-white-striped hat and shirt was changed for versions in the U.S. and Canada. The series of seven books started in 1987 and has spawned animated television shows, a comic strip and video games.

Participating locations include local shops and restaurants along with the Waterbury Public Library and the Waterbury (downtown) Post Office. The contest ends at 5 p.m. July 31.Winners will be drawn and announced on Aug. 1.
