Just as Mud Season is a season unique to Vermont, Free Cone Day is a local holiday of sorts that Vermonters have celebrated with Ben & Jerry’s for decades.

This year, Free Cone Day – April 3 – falls on a Monday. Local ice cream fans who know that the Waterbury Scoop Shop is closed on Mondays need not fear. Staff will be there for the annual event that attracts hundreds.

The company says the scoop shop and gift shop will be open on April 3 from noon to 8 p.m.

“The factory will be open specifically for Free Cone Day on Monday – so, no tours, etc. – we’re just focusing on the giveaway as a thanks to the community as it was intended since 1979,” explained company spokesman Sean Greenwood.

The Scoop Shop at the Waterbury factory on Vermont Route 100 is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and typically closed Sundays and Mondays.

Free Cone Day returns after a three-year pandemic hiatus. Now that you know all of this, Ben & Jerry’s has a silly quiz to help you decide what to order for your free cup or cone.
