The Vermont Agency of Transportation this week is implementing overnight ramp closures on Interstate 89 southbound in Montpelier (Exit 8) and Middlesex (Exit 9) as part of the Montpelier–Waterbury I‑89 Southbound Resurfacing Project.

These closures allow crews to mill and pave the entrance and exit ramps. The speed limit in the work areas is reduced to 55 mph, and fines will be doubled.

Closure Schedule

This schedule was updated on Wednesday, May 13, due to rainy weather conditions in the forecast this week. There now will be NO ramp closures this week on Wednesday or Thursday, May 13-14. New closures have been announced for Sunday and Monday, May 17-18. See below.

  • Monday, May 11 – I-89 SB Exit 8 on and off ramps in Montpelier will be closed from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m.

  • Tuesday, May 12 – I-89 SB Exit 9 on and off ramps in Middlesex will be closed from  7 p.m. until 6 a.m.

  • Sunday, May 17 – I-89 SB Exit 8 on and off ramps in Montpelier will be closed from  7 p.m. until 6 a.m.

  • Monday, May 18 – I-89 SB Exit 9 on and off ramps in Middlesex will be closed from  7 p.m. until 6 a.m.

These closures allow crews to pave the entrance and exit ramps and are weather-dependent.

Vermont 108 through The Notch is open for the season

Vermont Route 108 —a.k.a. Smugglers’ Notch or the Notch Road—has reopened for the 2026 season as of May 4. Crews have opened the gates and message boards indicating the reopening are on.

Vehicles over 40 feet in length and combination vehicles over 45 feet in length are NOT permitted through this section of roadway per 23 VSA § 1006b.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution and patience at the Stowe and Cambridge sides of Smugglers Notch as traffic control devices have been installed again this season. These devices, known as chicanes, recreate the configuration of the roadway geometry at the top of the Notch. The objective of the chicanes is to allow overlength vehicles the ability to turn around before causing obstructions in the Notch.

Both roads will be closed to all through traffic during the construction and are expected to remain closed for most of the summer while the new bridges are installed.

In addition, the Fayston road crew has begun their summer to-do list of ditching and road maintenance, and will start replacing culverts next week, beginning with two FEMA-related projects on Dunbar Hill.
