Obituary: Nancy Elaine Champney

Nancy E. Champney, 87, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at the Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center in Berlin. Born on February 15, 1939, in Montpelier, Vermont, she was the daughter of the late Dean and Clare (Chadwick) Johnson. She was married to Gordon Allen Champney, who predeceased her in 1992.

Nancy was a 1957 graduate of Waterbury High School. After her marriage to Gordon, she was happy and busy raising her family. She worked in the family business, Mountain View Crafts, and the Smilie Elementary School in Bolton. She was a member of the Bolton Town Fire Department Auxiliary and the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury.

She enjoyed volunteering at the Waterbury Historical Society. An avid reader, who also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and baking all of her family’s favorites. She enjoyed traveling Vermont and participating in the 251 Club.

She is survived by her children Stephen Champney and his wife Sherry, Dan Champney and his wife Melissa, Debbie Andrews and her husband Eric; grandchildren Eric and his wife Sara Champney, Brianna and her husband Derek Blood, Travis Jacobs, Megan and her husband Matt Geoffroy, Lance Champney, Destinee Champney, Brennon Champney, Stephen and his wife Anca Champney, Benjamin Champney and his partner Rose Poney, Emily Whitehill, Victoria Cruz, and Dominique Cruz, Maurice and his wife Paula Nadeau, Brian and his wife Nicole Nadeau, Sumner and his wife Rachel Andrews, Sully Andrews, and Sophie; 24 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; two brothers, William Johnson and David Johnson; as well as nieces nephews and extended family. 

She also was predeceased by a son, Michael Champney, who passed away on December 9, 2007.

Per Nancy’s wishes, no services will be held. A private family service will be held at a later date in Hope Cemetery in Waterbury. For those who wish, memorial contributions in Nancy's memory would be appreciated to the Wesley United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 214, Waterbury, VT 05676.
